Mission & Goals

We are a network of women and men working in communities and organizations toward more sustainable, just and disaster resilient ways of living in the United States.  With the leadership of grassroots women, we seek to develop and strengthen the nation’s resilience to the increasing array of hazards and potential disasters we will face in the coming decades.

We seek your support and active engagement in order to:

  • Build a platform for dialogue and collective action promoting disaster resilience through gender equality
  • Find common ground with allies working on gender and climate change, environmental  justice, sustainability, cultural survival, gender justice, children’s rights and related social justice and human rights campaigns in the US
  • Give voice to women’s hard-won experiences in disaster-affected communities and learn from this to promote more preventative approaches to disaster and more gender-responsive and participatory emergency planning
  • Identify and help address specific barriers to women and their families in full and equal participation throughout the disaster cycle, from mitigation to sustainable recovery
  • Exchange and build upon knowledge about gender in disaster gained by grassroots women with practitioners, policy makers, researchers and others at the community level
  • Raise awareness in the emergency management community about the need for gender-based analysis as part of an intersectional human-rights based approach to disasters
  • Reduce vulnerabilities and help build capacities of women and girls placed at heightened risk of disaster
  • Educate men about the gender dimensions of disaster and raise awareness of their  gender-based vulnerabilities and capacities among emergency managers
  • Provide gender-sensitive resources on disaster reduction for community educators  and organize
  • Provide material support to women’s organizations at the community level to increase their resilience to the effects of hazards and disasters
  • Engage national women’s organizations in promoting gender-inclusive and  environmentally sustainable policies that reduce the risk of disaster
  • Increase gender-based analysis and ethical approaches in disaster research
